Issue: Computer won't turn on

⚡ Computer won't turn on

You hit the power button. Nothing happens. Or it beeps and then dies. Or the screen stays black. Don't panic — this is usually fixable, and a lot of it is software, not hardware.

The diagnostic ladder

"Won't turn on" has a specific diagnostic ladder. We climb it in order, free of charge, before quoting any fix.

  1. No lights, no sound, no fan — power supply, battery, or charger. Cheapest fix.
  2. Lights on but black screen — display, RAM, GPU, or motherboard. Mid-range fix.
  3. Beeps then dies — RAM or motherboard. Often fixable by reseating.
  4. Fans spin but no boot — could be drive, RAM, or motherboard. Diagnosable.
  5. Boots to BIOS but not OS — drive or operating system. Recoverable in most cases, including the data.
  6. Boots part way and restarts — usually an OS or driver problem, fixable without losing files.

What it costs

If we say it's dead

Sometimes the laptop genuinely isn't worth fixing. We'll tell you that, recover your data to a new device or external drive for a separate flat fee, and you don't pay for the diagnostic.
